The Centre for Learning Technologies promotes, develops and supports the use of learning technology platforms for learning and teaching at SU. Some of the focus areas of the Centre
include (a) Telematic Services, that supports postgraduate off-campus programmes through interactive satellite broadcasts and web technology, (b) advisory services to faculties in the
effective use of learning technologies in an integrated teaching model, and (c) professional multimedia, video conferencing and mobile video recording services. Through these focus areas
and services the centre seeks to promote the richness and reach of the learning experience of SU students as well as to assist the teaching staff and faculties in their pursuit of quality academic programmes.
Aim of the post:
The Centre for Learning Technologies invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment to this fulltime one-year fixed term contract position from 1 July 2019 or as soon
as possible thereafter. The post of Blended Learning Designer (BLD) will provide online (instructional) design services to SU’s Division of Student Affairs – which includes the Centre for
Student Counselling and Development (CSCD), Centre for Student Communities (CSC) and the Centre for Student Leadership & Structures (CSLS) – to develop and run fully online short
programmes or blended/hybrid programmes, etc. Professional skills development (e.g. technical and online facilitation skills training), and support for online learners may be required on a
per-project basis. As such we are looking for applicants who have experience in online or blended learning design and user support and who thrives within a professional team environment.
The Blended Learning designer (BLD) will work on an evolving portfolio within the CLT (Centre for Learning Technologies), namely the development and implementation of innovative and
emerging models of higher and adult education at Stellenbosch University. The role requires working collaboratively with a team within the CLT that is responsible for the planning, development,
and delivery phases of a number of high-quality learning experiences in both fully online and hybrid formats. For these projects, the BLD will likely have some direct interaction with academic
staff, technical staff and professional academic support staff across the University (but very specifically from the division of Student Affairs). Technical support for online learners may be
necessary on a per-project basis.
The BLD will structure academic learning material, create interactive learning activities, design attractive course layouts / visual interfaces on the SU learner management system and devise
relevant modes of online assessment, in collaboration with the CLT team. Training will be offered on the SU learner management system and any institution-specific ICT systems, but the
BLD will be encouraged to continually analyse and apply emerging technological trends and innovative practices in Higher Education.
This role reports to the Director: Centre for Learning Technologies.
Working with the online learning design team on the development of online short programmes, hybrid learning models, and other evolving formats of educational content delivery at
Assisting with the compilation of resources for the course development process as required by the Division of Student Affairs;
Implementing innovative and emerging student support and development models, programmes and projects;
Documenting the course design, development, and implementation processes;
Providing project management for the course design and student support processes;
Working with academics, course development teams, student development and support staff and students on blended- and online course design as directed (including copyright
clearance; sourcing materials; scripting and editing, and any other aspects which might arise);
Supporting the digital materials designer with the setting up of the studio and organising the video filming studio and production management duties;
Work in collaboration with the CLT team on the creation of the multimedia learning resources;
User support (technical and administrative) to students/participants in the courses as well as to facilitators as needed.

Learning Management Systems e.g. Moodle
Experience in the use and support of video and audio software, basic knowledge of audio/video stream
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field e.g. education, computer sciences, information systems, learning technologies, online learning design, graphic and/or web design;
Extensive experience in the educational use and technical support of Learning Management Systems (e.g. Moodle) and knowledge of blended learning theories;
Two years’ relevant work experience;
Experience in the use and support of video and audio software, basic knowledge of audio/video streaming and experience with online conference software;
Understanding of the higher education context and online learning theory and practice;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Proven ability to successfully perform multiple tasks whilst adhering to budgetary constraints;
Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working in a team (the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively, but should also able to meet deadlines and work independently
in a fast-paced, dynamic environment);
High level of attention to detail;
Excellent time management and organisational skills;
Experience in creating digital content and online/ blended courses.
A relevant Master’s qualification or evidence of accredited training, beyond an Honours level, in the field of learning technologies;
Knowledge of educational learning design principles;
Experience in Higher Education teaching;
Experience in the Higher Education student affairs context;
Project management experience on relevant (i.e. instructional design/ online learning design) projects;
Evidence of continued development/training with regard to technology enriched learning;
A background in accessibility, usability and experience design, information design and communications;
Basic graphic design, website design or programming skills will be beneficial.
